Derek Johns became a Director of Sothebys in 1968 at the age of twenty, and was subsequently appointed Head of the Old Master Paintings department by 1974. In 1981 he became an independent art dealer in the Harari & Johns Ltd. partnership. Since establishing his own gallery Derek Johns Ltd in 1996 he has remained at the same Duke Street premises where he works with a young, international and dynamic team.
Derek Johns has expertise in all major European schools of art from the 12th to the 18th centuries, particularly Spanish, French and Italian works. The gallery also deals in European works of art and sculpture, and Old Master Drawings. Some 19th and 20th century aintings and drawings are held by the gallery, and exhibitions of contemporary artists are periodically held in the gallery.
Derek Johns exhibits regularly at the major international art fairs including TEFAF Maastricht, Biennale dellAntiquariato in Florence, and fairs in Milan and Palm Beach. Derek Johns undertakes valuations for probate, insurance and estate duty, and arranges sales by private treaty.
Well known for his talent for uncovering neglected masterpieces, Derek Johns supplies the worlds leading museums and private collections. Major discoveries in the past year include two formerly lost Francois Boucher works, an early Roman period Nicolas Poussin and a Francesco Guardi Interior. He has also uncovered two striking still lives by Luis Melendez.
